Is GW-W a diving rescue team ? Curious to see how you do this one
1 September, 10:39
Some times. This time it is a water rescue unit. I wanted to include the boat and trailer from the Revell "Gone Fishing" kit but I couldn't find one. So it will be a Unimog with a crane and a platform with canvas. I also want to include some lighting to this model so I am curious how it will turn out.

This is my reference:

This will be interesting. The crane is tough to build nicely. Glue and sand a part, paint it. Then glue two parts around it, sand and paint. And repeat. And repeat. And repeat…

Qwerty, you can find tiny SMD LEDs on eBay, that are pre wired. Those usually operate on 3V. Yes, you can add resistors to successfully operate them on 12V or anything you desire. Look out for the ones with the thinnest of wire. The ones I used, the wire is almost like human hair. I've seen some, where the wire is red and black, and quite thick? I'd guess at 1mm? That's pretty hard to hide, in 1/24-1/25 scale. I also ran two lengths of enameled wire, down each chassis rail. One Positive and one Negative. I used those as my main feed, then soldered the lights to that, with tails going to the hidden battery and switch.
I know that it sounds like a lot, but it's quite simple, if you can solder? And believe me, it makes things easier, for fault finding.
Now would be a good time to think about it.

That's truly pretty much information, but I already bought the SMDs from "LEDs and More". I always buy my electronics from them, they sell pretty good stuff. You can take a look at my GFLF in 1:24 scale, the Unimog GW-L 1 in 1:34 scale or the Airbus H145 in 1:32 scale. These three models I built were illuminated by using 0603 SMDs (ca.1,5 mm length)

One thing to note mate, although it probably won't matter on this build?
Chrome is conductive, so make sure you scrape it off, where your lights are concerned, or you could possibly get a short circuit? I've come across it myself, when I was wiring 3mm LEDs in my running lights, on one of my trucks. I used woodworking glue, that dries clear, to hold my LEDs in, too. Although in some cases, I've had to use super glue, but very sparingly 👍

Thanks for the advice. I didn't knew that, but in this build are no chrome parts

Steadily coming along, buddy.
What's the hatch for, on the roof of the cab? Water cannon???
1 21 September, 20:35
Thanks mate, the hatch is for a look out. Every unimog at least I know has a hatch on the roof, because it's a offroad vehicle mostly used by the military or the fire brigade and it needs to drive through very uneven terrain

It's just an oversized Mercedes badge on the roof, visible from outer space.

A roofhatch or escapehatch is mandatory for trucks in Europe, all trucks even highwaytrucks have them.

All these models can be scaled up or down.

Only if you can afford the initial outlay? Christmas is coming, my friend, so enjoy the festivities first, and maybe in the New Year, you can treat yourself? Unless you're sat on a pot of gold? In that case, I'll have a small island, preferably something near Malta? 🙂 🙂
24 November, 13:27
I wish I could gift you an island near Malta, but you are right. Christmas is coming and this will be expensive enough

If you have eBay, I can send you some links for inexpensive printers? I don't want to clog up your build progress though, so I'll PM you. Just save the links in your eBay 👍
