Personal interest: In retaliation for Iraq's violation of UN resolutions that disallowed attacking citizens opposed to the Saddam Hussein regime, Operation Desert Strike was planned and executed. I provided the weather forecasts for the strike, which was in part carried out by two B-52H Stratofortress from Barksdale AFB, Louisiana staging out of Anderson AFB in Guam. These bombers fired 13 CALCMs on Iraqi military infrastructure.
Model Specifications: This model represents a B-52H of the 20th BS in 1995, painted in overall dark gray.
Secondary Interests:
Cold War: During the 1980s resurgence of the Cold War, the B-52G and B-52H variants were assigned to the nuclear deterrence role. I was personally in awe of the B-52, particularly after hearing my father's stories about them from his Vietnam War service and witnessing them at airshows. B-52s were on continuous nuclear alert until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Through the 1980s, B-52G and B-52H variants were at Anderson AFB, Guam; Barksdale AFB, LA; Castle AFB, CA; Carswell AFB, TX; Dyess AFB, TX; Eaker AFB, AR; Ellsworth AFB, SD; Fairchild AFB, WA; Grand Forks AFB, ND; Griffiss AFB, NY; K.I. Sawyer AFB, MI; Loring AFB, ME; Mather AFB, CA; Minot AFB, ND; and Wurtsmith AFB, MI.
