The GrossDeutschland Divison evolved from the WachRegiment Berlin (Ceremonial Guards) in 1939. The Infantry Regiment GrossDeutschland saw action in France (1940) and Yugoslavia and USSR (1941). At the end of 1941, Infanrty Regiment GrossDeutschland was nearly wiped out in the drive for Moscow.
In the Spring of 1942, The Regiment was refit and enlarged to become the Infantry Divison GrossDeutschland. The Division took part in the Summer Campaign in Southern Russia and then moved North to Rhzev in November 1942. The GrossDeutschland Divison was battered and ineffective as a fighting force at the end of 1942. In Early 1943 GrossDeutschland Divison was refit and redesignated PanzerGrenadier Division GrossDeutschland and took part in the Battles at Kharkov, Kursk, and later retreated through The Ukraine into Romania.
In 1944, fighting continued in Romania, but in August, GrossDeutschland Divison transferred to East Prussia where it remained for the balance of the War. Severe losses all but destroyed the division in the Memel Bridgehead and the survivors surrendered to the Soviets on May 9, 1945, except for some men who were ferried to Germany and fell into British captivity
