Personal Interest: As many as 56 Titan II missiles were fueled and on 24-hour continuous alert throughout the Cold War. The dangerous nature of these liquid fuel rockets manifested at an Arkansas silo in 1980. A fuel leak and subsequent explosion killed one crew member, injured others, and ejected the W-53 warhead from the silo. Titan missiles did impact my USAF career in a positive way. Several were modified for space launch. Through 2003, Titan II rockets were launched from Vandenberg AFB, California. Their payloads included USAF Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) and NOAA weather satellites. I used photos from those satellites throughout my USAF career.
Model Specifications: This model is painted as an active duty nuclear weapon.
