The first pictures show that the kit is quite well equipped: etched parts add a few details that enhance the appearance of the USS Nautilus. The largest etched part gives the deck the right structure, but has to be filled into the hull contours at the edges. A comparative look at original pictures shows this necessity.

The Nautilus is slowly approaching the end of what I am capable of doing with ships (a nice sentence, isn't it? 🙂) The last etched parts, anchors, etc. will still find their place, and the last flaws should be fixed with a dry brush. I have come up with something special for the presentation of the finished model... More on that when the time comes! 🙂

The USS Nautilus model is now complete. I had the following idea for presenting the model: since, in my personal opinion, a submarine model on its own doesn't look like much and I want to showcase it in a way that really highlights what I like about these vehicles, so there are two presentation versions. You can see the first one here:
I have set up a dry dock that can generally serve as a backdrop for submarines and ships on a scale of 1:350. To do this, I scanned a display from Coastal Kits on a scale of 1:144, reduced it to 1:350, printed it out and cut it up so that I could build it spatially. The landscape background is designed for changing harbour architectures and can be exchanged. The rest is a photographic game with a low horizon line, exposures and colour accents. Of course, the whole thing is only an approximation of the original and is just intended to place the boat in an atmospheric setting.
Now, I will prepare the Nautilus for its second – and final – display: it will be placed in a water base and shown surfaced and in full motion. I would like to share these pictures in the near future!

Nautilus? Wasn't that Captain Nemo's submarine? It looked different somehow. Did you hold the manual upside down during the build? 🙂

The name 'Nautilus' has been a popular name for submarines since Jules Verne's literary classic. The US Navy, which names its boats, had several in its inventory. This one is one that I have wanted to build since my youth: famous as the first nuclear submarine and known for its prestigious submerged passage to the North Pole and its resurfacing there...
