I'm building both aircraft and they will obviously be very similar. To give them some variation I'm planning to use chipping fluid on one and make it slightly more worn.

looking good so far. what do you think of the kit(s)? got the Sam boxing waiting in my stash 😉

Thanks Spanjaard. I think the kit is excellent. Good details, good fit and clear instructions. Only negative so far is that no masks were provided for the inside of the canopy and it was a hassle to make them myself.

Great instrument panel and interior detail!👍 looking forward to your progress 👀

I'm having trouble deciding if I should add more base paint over the pre shading or not. Now it look a little too chequered but that might be toned down by decals and weathering. If I kill the pre shading the paintwork on this aircraft will be very monotonous.

Up to you, however I would leave it. Panel lines and weathering will tone it down.

I already caved in and added another layer but I did it carefully so I think the pre shading is still alive.

I will try to disguise it as weathering. Main problem seem to be the panel lines. I didn't cut the panels lines when I applied the decals, thinking I should wait until after the carrier film was removed. Maybe it works better if I cut the panel lines before peeling.

Edaurdaarrrggghh! Decals have ruined a few of my models. I leave the carrier film on now, bed them down to with an inch of their life and varnish after, or I get some after market decals. All said though a nice looking outcome on the Zero. 👍🥸👌

Nice looking. I never dared to peel of the carrierfilm. Always leave it on, a little set and sol and a splesh of varnish will do for me. So in my opinion your a hero to actually go the effort and peel off that film on a already flimsy decal. Nice outcome and nothing what can't be retouched.

Nice color variations ! I also experienced some trouble with Eduard decals , I found them quite brittle. I might also leave the carrier film from now on !

Thanks Mark, Timmie and Jean!
I understand what I did wrong was the application of the decals which made the peeling fail. I used white spirit to remove the carrier film which worked well except where the decal hadn't conformed to the surface. I used Tamiya mark fit strong for the application and I think the Eduard decals require something stronger.

For the carrier peeling I did not use any product, I just very carefully pushed it with a toothpick. I think you are right, it might be that they require a strong setting solution !

A setting solution is not the problem - you need to make sure that the decal is glued on everywhere. If you see the description in the Eduard Info journal (can't remember the issue) they recommend the Gunze Blue cap setter. And if you look at this liquid you will notice that it very white and smells a bit like wood glue. I have the feeling that this is not only a setter but acts as glue to safely bond the decal to the surface. So I followed this recommendation and it works with removing the carrier film later.

I think the first Zero is finished, there might be some small touch ups left.
The decals turned out OK.
A bigger problem is the canopy. I dipped it in Tamiya X-22 clear and probably didn't wait long enough before masking and the result is a mess.
I got the advice to try Tamiya polishing compound to fix it.
