Personal Interest: During the 1980s, I honestly was not aware of the different variants and capabilities of Soviet SLBMs, only that they posed an existential threat to our way of life. Soviet Delta I submarines could carry 12 SS-N-8 SLBMs. These Delta-class submarines entered service in the 1974 and continued to operate through 2004.
