Personal Interest: The controversial deployment of the Pershing II missile to West Germany was a major headline of 1983. The deployment was in response to the USSR having deployed mobile Intermediate Range Ballistic Missiles (IRBMs) within reach of all western Europe. Aggressive and realistic training exercises with these weapons brought the US and USSR closer to nuclear war than any time since the Cuban Missile Crisis. This danger of this situation eventually led to the US and USSR negotiating the INF Treaty, which banned nuclear IRBMs in 1987.
