Personal Interest: During the 1980s, I honestly was not aware of the different variants and capabilities of Soviet SLBMs, only that they posed an existential threat to our way of life. This SLBM was intended for use by the Yankee-class submarine, which could carry 16 SS-N-17 SLBMs. However, due to the SALT and START negotiations, only one Yankee-class submarine was built, and was operational for only a short period of time in the 1980s.
