19 November 2024, 15:39
You're welcome Thomas and Spanjaard. Still enough seats in the first row.
19 November 2024, 17:43
Hey Jörg and Thomas, good to see you here in the first row 🙂
19 November 2024, 19:55
Watching as this will be a great show! The little aircraft parts looks impressive - I do not complain anymore about small parts.
28 November 2024, 19:37
So let's have a start. Preparing the model for scratchbuilt and PE details.

Welcome David 🙂
WIP on my USS Santee. The kit has some inaccuracies, f.e. hawse pipes in a wrong position. Also a lot of details are missing.
Today's progress, hawse pipes in correct position, framework and bollards added at the bow.

WIP on my USS Santee. The forecastle is nearly done. Several modifications were done to give it a more realistic touch.
I start to replace the forward flight deck supports. Trumpeter designed the as a solid section instead of a I-section.

WIP on my USS Santee.
I replaced the supports below the flight deck. The moulded supports were much to thick and the replacements look much better.
The four flight deck supports on the bow are in place now. All in all it comes together as expected.

Nice progress Christian, I like all the scratched additions and replacements you are implementing 👍
21 December 2024, 14:51
Thank you very much Alec 🙂
WIP on my USS Santee.
According to ongoing research the forward flight deck supports needs to be modified.
The forward AA gun plattform has a different shape, therfore I scratchbuilt a new one.
Well, step by step it all comes together.

1 January, 20:32
WIP on my USS Santee.
Today's progress on the sea base. Once I have maeked the contour of the ships waves I start grinding the contours using a round wire brush in a motor tool. It's a bit dusty, believe me, but it gives a good monitoring to create the contours.
Next step sanding using ssnding paper to breake the rough surface a little bit.
Upon disangaging myself from all the dust a first layer of wall paint was added to the surface in a stippling motion.
The stippling motion create a wavy irregular surface. But to get the final result some more layers are needed. It is important not to paint layers to thick to avoid cracking when the paint dries.
At last I cut off the raised contour marking the boot topping and added a new marking using a line marking tool.

very nice tutorial about the base. happy new year Christian for you and those close to you 🙂
2 January, 20:52
Thank you Spanjaard, same to you and yours - a Happy New Year 🙂
5 January, 19:34
Meanwhile I seperated the AA gun tubs and the catwalks to replace the later with Eduard PE. The bulwarks on the gun tubs are thinned down repsectively replaced by 0,2mm styrene. At the moment I am working to cut of the doors along the catwalks and replace it with oval openings. The openings need to be cutted into the side wall and the plastic from the backside to be thinned out. Unfortunately I missed to do this before I added a lot of details to the flight deck. So carfully working is needed and to keep in mind for better planing next time 😄
2 11 January, 13:19
It has been a while since my latest post, because I was to busy with real work.
Anyhow, I mades some progress, adding the PE catwalks and stairs and start working on the island. I rebuilt the island to make it fit to Santees outfit in late 1942.

7 March, 18:09
Thank you Jan, Alec and bughunter 🙂
Meanwhile I have scratchbuilt the derick, it's supports and a rangefinder and I started adding details along the starbord site of the hull, like support structure below the island and mounts for both antenna masts.

Thank you Jörg, gorby and Robert 🙂
@gorby, same here with the "WOW" noticing all your kind comments 🙂
1 16 March, 09:50
After coming home from our club exhibition this weekend I really look forward to see you and your models in Lingen soon 👍

Latest update and progress with more details along the hull and catwalks and finally 3D printed Avenger from 3D Wild.

21 April, 17:47
I was astounded at the detail of PE that ship builders were adding to their builds. Now with 3D printed parts I'm completely gobsmacked. The quality of that printed Avenger is next level WOW!
22 April, 07:03
3D, PE or scratch build parts - all of them together were most impressive in real! I was lucky enough to see this ship with my own eyes, and it was even more impressive than in the pictures here. Under construction and without paint you can enjoy all the details even better 👍
22 April, 19:31
Thank you all for your kind comments 🙂
Meanwhile I built new exhaust stacks from scratch. Starboard and port differ, because on port there will be the LSO (Landing Signal Officer) platform next to the exhaust stacks and if they were pointed upwards, well it could be a smoked LSO 😄
1 24 April, 16:14
Some more details along the catwalks. This time refueling stations on port and starboard.

A much better catwalk on a model than the models on the catwalk on trash TV 😄 😄 😄
1 3 May, 16:05
As always: incredibly clean build. Maybe you have a technique or hint to share.
4 May, 10:14
Hi Michael, thx for your kind comment. Well, most it is patience, a steady hand and good magnifying glasses.
But what exactly you want to know about tipps & tricks?
4 May, 12:14
Ingmar, you're never to late 😉
Thx for your kind words and the time we spent to chat at EME in Lingen. CU in October in Veldhoven 👍

WIP on my USS Santee.
After cleaning all the parts the paintwork starts.
Lower hull, boot topping and the lower deck is painted and all small parts are painted in it's basecoat. The airwing got a primer first.
Paints are Vallejo acrylics, colour tone US Navy 5-L Light Gray, 5-O Ocean Gray, 5-H Haze Gray and 5-N Navy Blue. All paints are a mixed by my own using different tones of Vallejo grays and blues.

WIP on my USS Santee.
I masked the camouflage pattern using 0,5mm masking tape.
I will start with the bright colour 5-L Light Gray, remask the contours and continue with the adjoining colours and so on.
Let's see how it will work🙂

Thank you gorby.
Indeed the aircrafts details are excellent.
1 21 August, 09:25
Really nice project Christian. Always in awe of people who can make scratch building look so simple and convincing. A bit late to the show but pulling up a seat.
21 August, 09:46
You're welcome Gary. Thx a lot. It's never to late to join in 🙂
1 21 August, 10:05
WIP on my USS Santee.
The paintwork starts on the hull. First all areas painted in 5-L Light Gray were painted, next I started with 5-H Haze Gray at the stern and bow.
So far I am happy with the result 🙂

Yes, so the plan. Still a way to go, but I hope to finish her latest the week before.
1 27 August, 13:35
5-O Ocean Gray. And still a lot of masking.
Now 5-N Navy Blue, but this will be done tomorrow.

27 August, 18:37
5-N Navy Blue is applied and the hull finally done.
I spent approx. 24 hrs in masking, painting and demasking the Ms.17 pattern.
Next the decks.

Painting the decks is a time consumpting work. Patience and a steady hand is needed painting along the upperworks and deck details.

31 August, 22:15
The lower deck is painted and a subtle wash and highlights added. I also painted the railing dark gray.
Ah and I start painting the airwing. First a Dauntless already finished and ready for a gloss coat and decals.

3 September, 19:38
Thank you All 🙂
Indeed the tiny 3D printed aircaft are a huge advancement for our ship modelling hobby.
1 4 September, 08:11
The aircraft's detail are unbelievable for this scale, and your painting is top notch!
4 September, 08:27
@Spanjaard, you can buy them at Hobbyeasy in Hongkong.
Thank you All 🙂
The YZM Dauntless an Wildcat are really nicely done, but wait for the 3D Wild Avengers 😁
1 4 September, 09:38
Today I finished the stained flight deck. A lot of masking was required to paint all the metal fittings first. The blue flight deck stain was painted last. The paint was highly deluted and sprayed translucent in some areas to get the worn out look.
I am really happy with the final result and all the time I spent masking and painting it was worth it.

1 6 September, 20:09
Detail painting has started with the boats. I also painted the gratings on the mast in deck gray and added the railings.

8 September, 11:33
Today, I completely masked the flight deck and then painted the elevators on the inside, as well as the catwalks in the same way as the fuselage camouflage.
Again a lot of masking was needed to gain the final result.

Christian
9 September, 20:26
I got "No Smoking" decals my friend Frank made for me. They will be placed inside the elevators - thx again Frank 🙂
The catwalks are finally painted, and I sculpted a bow wave using White Putty, so I can start painting the base in between the other steps to do.
I also painted the carrier island pattern. Again a lot of masking was needed. To align the position of the pattern to corospond with the pattern on the hull was also time consumpting, but I am really happy with the final result.

15 September, 19:05
All small parts, the hull and flight deck got a wash with oils and highlights, details and streaks. Except small corrections and flight deck markings the paintwork is already done.
Also the first parts are assembled and the water base is ready for a clear coat.

I follow your builds now for several years, and each project is an improved version of the previous. I see your posts here as a story being told. And I'm pretty sure that there a lot of people here who like reading
22 September, 05:49
@Lode, thank you my friend for your kind words. It means a lot 🙂
@Gary, Bozo, thank you very much 🙂
22 September, 18:21
painting details in the engine in 1/350..... I wish I could get that in my 1/144 wow!
24 September, 12:59
Very impressive work. Fascinating what's possible these days with 3D printing, and what you can achieve with the painting. I really hope I can admire the final result in person in a few weeks.
24 September, 19:54
Thank you all for your kind comments 🙂
@Ingmar, so the plan. Looking forward to see you in Veldhoven 🙂
1 24 September, 20:46
A bit more weathering effects along the waterline.

2 25 September, 20:13
Flight deck markings are painted on, water base got it's gloss coat, boats are in place and I start adding the decals on the aircraft.

Christian
2 30 September, 19:12
The decals are applied and covered by a semi dull coat.
Before I can start to assemble all the parts I need to align the aircaft and items inside the hangar.
I also installed the aft elevator half way down. A first setup withe one of the Avengers.

2 3 October, 19:41
Today I placed some aircraft, accessoires and figures inside the hangar. I placed them in the areas were a look through the lowered elevators and open hangar doors is possible. Anyhow, once the flight deck is assembled there is not much to be seen.
Before the flight deck came into place the forward AA gun platform must be installed.
Finally I assembled all railings along the catwalks.

I have to say, this build is quite remarkable — your 1:350 scale aircraft have detail on par with my 1:72 builds! 😄
Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating a bit, but at this scale they're impressively detailed and look fantastic. 👍
I'm really enjoying watching this come together!
5 October, 19:03
Thank you All for your kind comments 🙂

Once the deck will be filled, it'll be another fantastic model!
1 8 October, 20:42
The water is looking great. And I see some interesting floater net detailing.
1 8 October, 21:50
Thank you All 🙂
Steven, the floater net baskets are Swordfish Naval Models Accessories parts. IMHO a better choice than PE baskets.
1 9 October, 09:16
Christian, you've once nailed it again. Fantastic build and I'm glad that you've shared your journey to this beauty with us, mortals.
10 October, 05:36
Timmie and Lode, thank you very much for your kind comments 🙂
11 October, 07:24
Exceptional detail work, definitely an eye catcher wherever you will put it! 👍👍
11 October, 16:24
The rigging is done, crew and airwing in place and Santee settled down on the sea base. So I call it done.
Again a pleasure to share the WIP with all you Scalemates 🙂
Happy Modelling, Christian
15 October, 19:06
Nice work, Christian. I see the elevators are lowered, shouldn't there be safety barriers? Like at [img1]
15 October, 19:23
Thank you All for your kind comments. I much appreciate it 🙂
@Steven, I thought about it, but according to my reference there was nothing rigged during operations.
The photo you have shared shows a Sangamon class in the yard during refit and repair.
2 15 October, 20:34
And again congrats - looks realistically busy with all those planes and crewmen! 👍
1 15 October, 22:40
Beautiful result Christian, I am looking forward to see it in the flesh.
