Inspired by an article by Bryan Philpott on P-38 conversions of the then new Airfix P-38F/H in an old Airfix Magazine (Jan 1974).
Straightforward conversion requiring minor surgery and filler.
Despite a large order for the RAF, only three Lightning 1s reached the UK for testing. Because of the wish to achieve spares compatibility with the RAF's Curtiss Tomahawks engines (less powerful, deletion of superchargers and propellers rotating in the same direction) the performance was impaired to an unacceptable level and acceptance abandoned in 1942.
