Personal interest: The MiG-23P was the most numerous PVO interceptor. A very high-speed aircraft, the MiG-23P was a threat to even the fastest US aircraft within range. These aircraft were on alert to intercept US aircraft, most often USAF RC-135s or USN EP-3s flying from far eastern airfields, including Alaska.
Model Specifications: This model represents a Russian MiG-23P of the mid-1990s. Painting and markings of these aircraft did not change from those of the Soviet Union.
Secondary Interests:
Cold War: In 1983, MiG-23P aircraft of the 528th Fighter Aviation Regiment scrambled from Smirnykh Airbase to intercept KAL 007 when it strayed over Soviet Airspace. They were unable to locate and identify the Boeing 747, and PVO GCI officers were furious. This was a contributor to the Korean airliner being shot down soon afterward by another group of interceptors when KAL 007 entered Soviet airspace a second time.
