The 6th Armored Division was established in February 1942 at Fort Knox, Kentucky. The Division entered combat in July 1944 taking part in the Normandy breakout affected by Operation Cobra. In August and September, the 6th Armored Division helped clear Brest before turning East. The division reached the German border on 9 December 1944 and took up defensive positions near Saarbrucken. On 23 December 6th Armored Division moved North to the Ardennes Forest fighting at Bastogne and helping restore the lines in January 1945. On March 25th, 1945, the 6th Armored Division crossed the Rhine River at Oppenheim and advanced to Rochlitz Germany on 15th April and halted to await the Soviet Army advancing from the East.
