The German army decided to re-capture Budapest, the Hungarian capitol which had been surrounded by the Soviet Red Army by the Christmas of 1944.
In January 1945 the first attempt was launched from the region of Komárom (hence the naming: Konrad) on the right side of river Danube towards to the South-East direction, focusing on Budapest.
Meanwhile on the opposite bank of the river PzDiv20 was in action to secure the service area (logistic hub) for the German army.
