Lavochkin La-5FN

I was eight years old when someone bought this…

I simply love this "exploded view" and "follow the order of number of parts" old-school assembly instructions 😉 I'll keep my fingers crossed!

Ha ha yes. I'm actually a bit sad that there are no other 70s kits in my stash. There is a certain pleasure in it.

I just realised there is part of another kit in the first photo. The thing with 71 on it is the engine cowl off an old Airfix 1/24 Spitfire. I use it to test colours and decals. The 71 is from the AML set I've bought for this.

You haven't seen the Mig-19 kit that I had to assemble as a child.

I believe that a hobby should be enjoyable and the result of the work should be pleasing.
In your case, it seems to me that Hobby Boss kits are more suitable for you.

Tested one of the decals from an option I won't be choosing and they seem to be really lovely to put on. Such a relief after my PrintScale nightmare.

I'm sure these are fantastic when you're an expert but they have been terrible for me.

Hi, I am a 61yo former aircraft modeller (childhood to late teens, then early 30s to hang off my young son's ceiling, but nothing for over 20 years). I am really feeling the bug biting me again, and even though I think my eyesight and lack of such a steady hand might count against me, I want to try some inexpensive 1:72 WW2 single engines. No more Spits/109s etc. in fact I'm steering away from RAF US and Luftwaffe entirely.
I've got myself an eBay wishlist of old "pre owned" but unmade kits. I know this is probably risky (faded decals etc.) but I was never the best so it wouldn't bother me too much. (I was a brush painter and will remain so). It's the "doing it" I'm looking for. I also like the idea of not bringing too much new plastic into the world; I realise just one old bloke doesn't make much difference. Maybe it's also nostalgia. So brands-wise I used to find Heller, Hasegawa, Tamiya and one or two others best. Does that still stand?
One other thing is that I'm in Oz so for a lot of my list I have to take the postage/shipping cost into account. Anyway just rambling now. Thanks for having me.

Getting close to finishing the D520 now. I only get little windows of time so it's slow but that gives me time to think and plan; almost like project management. I hope that careful thought and planning might partly make up for my skills which are quite poor now! This is a fifty year old kit so (a) it's probably one of the worst in terms of challenges with the build and so a good test; (b) at least it's been made after sitting in its box for half a century.
Next I think will be the Italaerei Lavochkin which is even older....

It's been an interesting day. I decided to get the decals onto my D520 before putting on the small final parts (landing gear and ailerons, basically). I bought the Print Scale decal set as the 50yo Heller decals were a bit faded and I assumed might also crack etc. Well imagine my surprise: I know I am a clumsy modeller but the Print Scale have been a disaster; splitting, folding over etc. In desperation I turned to the old Heller ones. They go on beautifully; they are also matt (which I prefer) where the PS ones are gloss. Sure they're a little faded but the roundels are obviously French and not post-Mussolini Italian for example. They may also be a bit thick for modern tastes but to be honest I've made so many mistakes on this model it really doesn't matter too much.
Just one question for the master modellers here: one of the big tricoleur tail decals seems to have lost all its adhesive. It's solidly intact but I just need it to stay on the kit. What's the best glue for this, wallpaper paste?!

I'm going to start this one as it looks as though it can be a more straightforward job (assuming it fits OK) in between waiting for various stages of the Kawanishi Shiden to dry/set etc. Washed the sprues carefully today.
I'm looking forward to the three-colour camouflage on the upper surfaces and I've gathered a lot of photos for guidance.
