Steven Van Dyck AuthorAbout 62 planes have been prepared for painting now. Only the Otakis remain. I had to discard the cast L'Arsénal Hawkeyes, these seem like entirely different planes compared to the printed ones and are even worse than the Otaki's. The Sea Kings are nice but extremely fragile to liberate. The vehicles were a piece of cake compared to that. The weapon set I got with the hangar seems overscale compared to the ones I got with the planes.

Steven Van Dyck AuthorToday a comparison of the L'Arsénal Hawkeye, Intruder, Prowler, Corsair II and Sea King 1/400 printed rsin kits with the original Otaki 6th Fleet set. Some of them like the A6 and A7 planes can be combined quite well with ony some panelline differences. Others like the Otaki Hawkeyes and Sea Kings need some work. Strangely the dimensions of the Otaki Hawkeye match well with the data found in the sources, but the outline doesn't match on Wilipedia, while it works well for the resinkit. The choppers need to be heavily worked out to match the resin ones. The hangar weapon set was also cleaned up.

Steven Van Dyck AuthorThanks. The baby brachio was now painted with an experimental method invented by me, wrapping the figure in elastic bands and then spraying pink, repeating the first stage and at last spraying grey. The result is a random pattern of bands that feels partly natural. I tried out pictures with different background colors. The archaeopteryx model from the kit was painted Gunze yellow, but it was glossy and I wanted to add some metallic colorshift. It strarted to peel and I used this to get a feathery effect.

Steven Van Dyck AuthorPictures from the 2025 edition of ESM Houten, with the Warships in 1/350 and 1/700 Stand where I contributed with USS Princeton and the Overlord diorama. In the contest I had the BAE Archer, which was judged Higly Commended, the Parthenon, Colosseum and both Dunkerques which were Commended, and Béarn. This time the judging criteria were shown and quoted on the labels, a nice touch.

Steven Van Dyck AuthorConstruction has begun. After a few hours of sanding the painting could start, because these figures have the print supports removed at the print shop. I used Tamiya and Gunze colors. After this stage, some masking will happen.

Steven Van Dyck AuthorThanks, Dash. I prepared the coat for a layer of rattle can gold, with the buttons masked by using a punch&die and the rest of the gold lacing with Tamiya tape and gum. I had sprayed the sword with silver but had aimed the tip down while curing, leaving a runner. I had to sand that down and respray. After the gold spraying, some overspray could not be avoided. The black and grey will be resprayed locally. The embroidery will also be painted gold with a fine brush.

Steven Van Dyck AuthorAfter some airbrush corrections, I started to use the pencil to paint the details on the face, correct and add gold parts and then do some washes. Using Tamiya wash is hard when the True Metal gold is used, this product is attacked and will spread the moment it is in contact with the wash. For the gunmetal parts on the scabbard I used a Molotow silver marker and black wash.

Steven Van Dyck AuthorThe turret interior is assembled further. Lots of options appear throughout the manual, but you need some sense of interpretation for the function. Even the interior of the cabin exhaust fan is provided. A scheme with two aspects is given to bend a wire for the turret rotation mechanism, this is clearly not for the beginning modeller.

Yngve NWhen I joined Scalemates I never thought I would see something like this. Educating both in history, architecture and scratch building. As someone who attends concerts and some sports events regularly it's been really fascinating to learn how this building has exactly the same system for seating as used in all the modern arenas I visited. It has been a true pleasure following this.

Steven Van Dyck AuthorIf you want to see a tongue-in-the-cheek anime about the Castlevania games subject, this will surely be entertaining. I saw both series and now I found on Ebay a figure of the coolest character, not the protagonist Trevor Belmont but his half-demonic buddy Alucard. All supports had been carefully removed by the German seller. I was able to dry-fit the parts without any sanding and only the sword was warped. SOme areas will need some surface work, like the hair showing series of little support burrs. Already it looks imposing.

Steven Van Dyck AuthorAn order is placed with L'Arsenal to print the 1/350 Enterprise resin hangar parts for Tamiya in 1/400. These should fit with some adaptations in the Otaki hull. The main problem is that Tamiya made their model as a box with both front starboard elevators in line. My model should be better with a curve in the hull and an angle in the elevators. They would also provide decals in 1/400 but I will have to scratch the PE parts.

Steven Van Dyck AuthorThe Tamiya horse riding infantryman is built and added to the dio. Some hidden seams are filled and for the reins you have to use a piece of ABS foil that was provided in the kit.

Steven Van Dyck AuthorOne idler fell to the ground and was either stepped upon or it collapsed under gravity being white metal. The outer teething ring was deformed and had to be straightened, so the connection with the axle broke. All is redressed as much as possible, though some slight deformity could not be avoided. I will compare to the kit idler to see what is used best. I also removed all ammo hatches to replace these with the eduard PE. I did not put this on top of the hatches like it is intended, I completely removed the plastic. Like that I can leave the RSO with an almost depleted ammo hold, showing the three turned brass grenades left. This meant that I had to add hatch support strips like I found in Nuts&Bolts.

Steven Van DyckMy set was sold without the sprockets, so I think these sprockets are out of production. I didn't need them anyhow, the fit is excellent.
