Robby the Robot

As a visual representation of Robby, this kit does a solid job. The proportions are faithful, the detailing is respectable, and it looks like the iconic sci-fi automaton.

However the head assembly is a particular exercise in frustration. Seams run through and around his "ears", demanding every filler compound and sanding implement you own. It’s the kind of design that suggests the designer never had to actually build the thing. You’ll spend more time smoothing the head than assembling the rest of the kit.

The base is a bit minimalist. It’s a patch of terrain that feels more like a placeholder than a deliberate design choice. I had a couple of attempts at making it interesting but I still look at it and think "meh". I wish they'd put him in a technological setting, a console and a bit of bulkhead would have been my choice.

In short, Robby looks good when finished but getting there requires patience and a full arsenal of seam fixing tools.
