AustroHungarian Albatross D III 1

Not 100 % pleased but ok and time to move on
Project: Albatros D.III a

I'm fighting the model or the model is fighting me.. There is good detail on the plastic, but there is plenty of flash on the sprue. The plastic is a softer plastic than Airfix or Revell kits. The fit is ok, but there are no pin matching hole marks to attach to each other.. Details on the engine (exhaust ports as well as the machine guns) were a tight fit. I was almost not going to use the machine guns but I found a picture that shows the barrels snug by the engine.. The exhaust ports broke off one by one in assembly so they will be re attached later..... I have another Roden Austro Hungarian Alabatross D III variant kit also, but that will stay in the stash for a while..
1 4 December, 00:05
I have the aircraft fully assembled. The fighting didn't stop in either direction. Not my best build. Did not bin it however. The soft plastic struts broke and I fixed it but did not take a break. I then saw I assembled the landing gear BACKWARDS.. A snip later and crazy glue it is corrected. Decals were fragile..
1 6 December, 18:49
Finished. Did not dare to try rigging... There is not the proper clearance for the upper wing to fuselage as the struts were attached too low on the fuselage. Poor little pilot can barely see forwards... Back to a late WW2 build.

Due to the small number of parts the assembly was quick.. I have a metallic silver for the rocket colour. I made an astronaut figure that will be on the moon base to attempt to show size of the vessel.
1 25 November, 23:22
I just viewed the movie.. One of the astronauts was asked what he thought of the moon - he was a New Yorker, I think maybe even Brookyn. He said "no..." and etc.
Just one more light clear coat, I am waiting for an accessory to arrive that I may use with the kit...

Now that it is nearly complete, the yellow cowling looks ok. I scored some panel lines into the paint. If I would do this over I would score some panel lines on the upper wings before assembly.

Just about finished this little one. Decals are on. Need to look at the landing gear (may have put them on backwards....) and then a light, flat clear coat.
16 September, 22:17
Yes. They were BACKWARDS. I managed to take them off with a little twist since they were not fully cured. I used CA glue to put them back since the fitting holes were no longer perfect... so far so 👍
16 September, 22:29
The aircraft is done... Turned out ok. A nice coolish sunrise this morning.

Thanks Guy. The F-106 is one of the nicest looking jets. Next back to a Stuka - not a pretty bird at all..

Ok, I had an off day on the weekend and just was not satisfied with the mottling on the fuselage (by brush). Part of that was the realization that I may not have cross referenced the Humbrol Airfix colours correctly to the RLM Vallejo colours I had. So I ended up doing a few attempts, sometimes a little better, mostly inconsistent. I just extended the splinter camo across the fuselage. The yellow 'should' be straight forward..? 🙂
21 July, 22:55
Feeling better about the aircraft model. It's coming together well. I found other images of this 109 that have the same paint scheme. Just need to spray flat clear coat, and put the antenna on. (Then do my official portrait thing)
25 July, 22:48
Finished.. Except for the portrait. Tomorrow will be hot and sunny. I will try to take the picture nearer sunset.
The antenna is dog hair.
Not sure why some of the photos are upside down... I flipped them and those were also topsy turvy

Upper panel lines done. Underside panel lines to do. Then weathering..
5 July, 23:26
Weathering and staining done. Official portrait(s) taken. I wasn't aware that the F4F was used right to the end of the war. Antenna wire is EZline. Connecting cable to radio compartment is dog hair, still need to work on my antenna skills. All in all a pleasant little build. Did not like the landing gear and I strengthened it and made it non-authentic, but that's ok with me. I ordered this kit (and and F6F) after reading Harry Turtledoves 2 book alternate history "Days of Infamy". The descriptions of the pilots and their aircraft got to me.

This will be an interesting build. It is an older kit of an aircraft I knew nothing about. The kit has little detail and lots of flash and ejector pin marks.
I will be franken making cockpit tubs and other details from left over parts. Historical technical accuracy to the wayside...
24 May, 19:16
Followings 👀
I have the same kit in the stash. Very interested in IJN naval aviation. Also don't know a lot about them including this aircraft, other than the usual pop info about the A6M and such.
I agree that the detail is lacking on this kit. Almost primitive in a way, but that's the older products for you.
Cheers!
1 24 May, 19:47
I just added the decals - old decals. I had not experienced this before but the paper backing actually started to tear as the decal was slid off the paper.. Placement of the decal on the aircraft was also touchy if there was not enough water to move it about, otherwise the decal tore as well (as you can see in the photo) - well that's where 'weathering' will start. There were NO instructions in regards to paint scheme or decal placement.
4 June, 12:40
Well the kit is finished. Some cockpit detail was added from my spares sprues. There was no bomb in the kit but the picture on the assembly instructions had one- 250 Kg unused from a Russian Spanish civil war TU bomber. Same with the wing guns and rear gun. The wing guns were just plastic stubs. I cut them off, drilled into the wing and added the mg also from the Russian ICM kit (so was the rear gun) 7.62 mm I think. I am still in the Pacific Theatre for my next kit - a Wildcat F4U Grumman.

Complete - not bad. Cockpit masking ok. Dog hair as antenna wire. Learn learn.
A cool long weekend Monday. But it is sunny. Good enough for the 'official portrait' - outdoors and on a mirror. The next aircraft is a Japanese float plane. AM22 E16A1 Zuiun

"Palette Cleanser" - so far a 3 day - weekend build. Assembly and some weathering done. TODO- clear coat - decals - a little more weathering and flat coat.
The main issue was working on the little soldiers... Even with magnifying glasses head band I could not detail the faces..
27 April, 23:26
