Trumpeter 1/32 F-14A Tomcat – Build Report
Kit: Trumpeter F-14D Tomcat (converted to F-14A)
Scale: 1/32
Unit Markings: VF-84 “Jolly Rogers”
Time to Complete: ~6–8 weeks (approximate)

Overview
This build started with Trumpeter’s 1/32 F-14D Tomcat kit, which was carefully converted to represent the earlier F-14A variant. The A model, best known for its Pratt & Whitney TF30 engines and distinctive exhaust nozzles, required several modifications to backdate the D-model tooling. Finished in the iconic VF-84 “Jolly Rogers” markings, this model captures the rugged character of the early Tomcats.

Conversion to F-14A
The most significant change was the replacement of the F110 afterburner nozzles (used on the D model) with the correct TF30 nozzles used on the A model. These were sourced from aftermarket parts and required trimming and careful blending to fit the Trumpeter fuselage. Additional tweaks included:

Removal or reshaping of D-model avionics bumps.

Adjustments to the cockpit coaming to reflect the earlier layout.

Tail and ECM fairing refinements as appropriate to an A model configuration.

Construction
The rest of the build proceeded largely as per the kit:

Cockpit: Detailed out-of-box with minor enhancements like wiring and seatbelts. The cockpit layout remained mostly accurate after minor conversion work.

Fuselage & Gun Bay: The forward fuselage features a fully exposed 20mm Vulcan cannon bay, complete with detailed ammo feed system and open access panels. This was carefully painted and weathered to highlight its mechanical complexity.

Wings: Fixed in a mid-sweep position for a sleek stance. Flaps, slats, and spoilers were positioned for interest.

Landing Gear: Nicely detailed, with added hydraulic lines and metallic weathering.

Painting & Weathering
Scheme: Classic U.S. Navy Gull Gray over Insignia White using Tamiya and Gunze paints.

Effects: Heavy weathering was applied with pre-shading, oil washes, and pastels, replicating the worn-down carrier deck look common to mid-80s VF-84 jets.

Canopy: The open canopy is tinted slightly with a transparent green/amber hue to simulate the anti-glare coating.

Ordnance & Details
Fully armed with AIM-54 Phoenix, AIM-7 Sparrow, and AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles. The inclusion of boarding ladders, open avionics panels, and the detailed gun bay all contribute to a dynamic, “in-maintenance” display configuration.

Conclusion
While Trumpeter’s F-14D kit is a solid base, converting it to an accurate F-14A added a layer of complexity—and satisfaction. The result is a striking representation of one of the U.S. Navy’s most iconic aircraft. With its bold VF-84 livery, open gun panels, and correct TF30 nozzle configuration, this build is a real showstopper and a great challenge for experienced modelers.
