1C-Inspiration: Homeland (1969-91)

This collection showcases the aircraft that inspired me to join the active duty United States Air Force. I grew up in rural Nebraska, within the O’Neill Military Operations Area (MOA), where Air National Guard pilots from nearby bases regularly trained. With minimal VFR civilian traffic and few tall structures in the region, pilots were authorized to fly as low as 500 feet above ground level, turning ordinary days into impromptu, low-level airshows. These dramatic flyovers ignited my fascination with aviation. Later, as a ROTC cadet in the Air Force Reserve, I had the chance to experience several of these inspiring aircraft up close at Ellsworth AFB in South Dakota and McConnell AFB in Kansas.
