Album info

The first tanks in Russia were British and French types sent over during WWI. Many of these fell into the Red Army's hands upon the conclusion of the Revolution and formation of the USSR. In 1919, the first Soviet built tanks were ordered. The KS tanks was simply a copy of the French FT-17 and 14 were completed by 1922. This practice of acquiring and adapting a suitable domestic production vehicle became the norm for the next 15 years.

1930 Marked significant changes for the Soviet tank program. A Soviet tank commission acquired several tank types from British firms including the Vickers 6 Ton, and the Christie Tank from the American builder Walter Christie. Both of these tanks were rejected by their native Armies but would become major production types for the Soviet Union.
