Digging deep into the stash with the 1/48 MiG-17F by Aeromaster. This is a fairly simple kit with a bunch of resin upgrades.

Welcome Ben! Last night I worked on some of the sub-assemblies. The wings had some small sink marks that required putty. The resin parts look great and show no signs of shrinkage which is amazing considering the age of the kit.

Super neat, I didn't know Aeromaster did the ol' rebox with extra goodies a la Eduard.

Welcome Greg & Rando. I have now cut the fuselage to accommodate the resin update part. I'm feeling a but unsure and foresee much clamping and super glue…

Thanks Danumurthi and welcome to the build. Today I made some progress painting the cockpit.

Today I finished the surgery on the front fuselage to place the resin update part and was able to also attach the tail.

Looks awesome, how was it getting the fit? Some very clean trimming done there 🙂

The fit is ok. I always expect to need putty on these older tool kits. The panel lines are huge, but that makes it easy to rescribe. Also the crazy camo and weathering on this will cover up any errors nicely 😁

Indeed, the F-8 I'm converting now has been a real putty queen. I have the Hobby Boss MiG-17, but saw this older kit on eBay and am still intrigued. Older kits just have an allure to me

I think any other kit is newer than this one lol! I'd bet that Hobby Boss one is ok, especially if you find it at a good price.

The Aeromaster instructions state to use hypodermic needles for the gun barrels and a resin part for the cannon. You could also wait 29 years to build the kit and a company called Master Model will appear and the job is much easier AND includes a very fine set of pitot tubes as well 😁

Thanks Rando! Those barrels really look nice and so do the pitots.
Today was a coat of Dark Aluminum using AK Xtreme Metals. A little haphazard since this is just an undercoat for some chipping a weathering. Man this stuff is toxic! I have 4 exhaust fans running and the room still smells of lacquer!

My Saturday was very productive. I had all day to myself and was able to apply a layer of hairspray and to two main camouflage colors.
Looking at my one good photo of this plane, I decided that Hasegawa's 1/72 kit had good painting instructions so I somewhat followed their images. It appears five different guys were painting this jet at the same time so it gave me some room for interpretation.

Thanks! At first I wasn't sure, but the scheme is growing on me. Started with the chipping today.

An observation from today's work on the landing gear: Warhammer 40K Dark Angels Green works well for Soviet Era wheels. 😂

Calling this one complete. Thanks for following along! This was a fun build of an old clunky kit with absolutely zero issues.

Thank you Ben, Gerard & Spanjaard 🙂 The painting was the most fun I've had on a project in a while.
