My scratch built engine is getting close to ready to fill the kit's void.

Thanks gorby. It wasn't easy making something that would fit in the space.

1:72 is really fiddly 😮 At least if you try to add details.
I must admit I have also s Fieseler Storch in 1:72 to be built, it is the Stripdown one (which is only available in 1:72).
26 September, 16:33
Bughunter I'm sure your strip down is better quality than this kit. This has a few issues but I've decided not to rebuild the back of the cockpit because I have no idea what version of this plane was in Croatia during the war. In spite of the fact that they don't tell me what version the kit is, I am trusting an untrustworthy design and just going with it.

This kit is from 1976 so there is plenty for me to scratch build on it.

Me too. I like your fashioned Argus AS-10 and how cleanly you cut put the cooling slits. Well done.
IBG is releasing a new Storch? That would be interesting.

Does anyone know what the slats under the horizontal stabilizers are, and what they are used for? It looks like they would prevent the downwards movement of the elevators.
29 September, 21:57
I have this Storch reference book from MMPBOOKS in my library. On many of the photos this tail slat is shown, but not on all.
There is a technical drawing of this detail shown and photos. There are 3 mount struts on each slat, pointing slightly forward. They do not conflict with movement of elevators. In the drawing they are shown with an inverse wing profile (flat upper side)
In the text is stated that those horizontal tail slats increase the tail's efficiency in low speed flight.
My Tamiya Storch build had them too, nicely rendered by Tamiya: Work in progress | Album by bughunter (1:48)

Frank, thanks for the info and images. This helps me get a better understanding of what was going on.

Slowly but surely this is starting to look like a Storch. Lots of missing details have to be added before I can put the canopy and wings on.

A UV pen would have been helpful for the 5 part canopy of this kit. Does anyone know of a good one that's not too expensive? I'm sure I'll be doing more kits with multiple part canopies in the future.

Look at Temu, they have a bunch that are cheap and will sell the resin at a decent price. Just don't play any of their games with discounts, it's not worth it.

Thanks DM. I just have to be careful that I don't get stuck in the details, but I am learning to manage my advanced modeling syndrome. I'm a lot better at finding a balance than I was last year.

UV light - maybe this one? Traudl's usually has good products.

So, I added a bunch of stuff in the cockpit that won't really be seen. But there is a lot of glass in this cockpit so maybe some of it will shine through.

I'd like to put the flaps down and adjust the ailerons but that would require completely rebuilding the wings because there is a large difference between where they connect on the top and the bottom. So, I guess I will leave it, unless I find it needs to be done.

I got the legs on, but I may make some adjustments or replacements. They are not really to scale but I don't have the right jigs to hold the angles in order to solder metal legs correctly. I'll have to think about it. I might just accept it the way the kit provided them. We will see. Tomorrow is another day.

Those brass struts look way better than the original oversized plastic ones.
2 18 October, 23:09
I don't think I am familiar with that coin in the last picture...
Is it a pfennig?
19 October, 01:25
Thanks Michael, I am glad I figured out a way to bend the brass struts into shape without too much trouble. They are a definite improvement over the kit. At this point I am spending more time doing research than putting the model together. But it is very close to painting. I just have a few more steps to go before I can start.

Welcome Ben. This one is getting close. I'm in the painting phase now.

It's not easy being green. Especially when your airbrush doesn't want to work.

Good progress! Pic 84: Eduard provides those teardrop holes on some PE frames.

I can send you the decals from Academy kit, if you wish (only the German ones - I intend to build the Cricket version of this kit...)
30 November, 12:46
I've decided not to print new decals but to repair what I have with a brush and paint. Wish me luck.

Do they still make Microscale Liquid Decal Film? I know you can still get it in stores but I heard production was discontinued for some reason. You are right Desert Marlin it would be good to have a bottle of it. I wonder if a clear varnish would do the same thing?

Joining late, great work with the kit! 👍🏻 you inspired me to start my build
Regarding decals, I have a spare set german markings (Academy) for the Fi 156 as I will use swedish decals in my S14 build. Send a PM if you are interested.

Welcome J35J. I'm glad I could inspire you. I look forward to following your build.

So, I completed this build today. Final reveal pictured will be forthcoming.

The gunner's station in Storch always reminds me the scene in the movie "La Grande Vadrouille" 😄 😄 😄

Thanks for your support guys. The pictures don't do it justice but I'm kinda proud of this one.
