Lieutenant Joichi Tomonaga, IJN Hiryu air unit commander, Battle of Midway, June 4-5, 1942
Joichi Tomonaga was air unit commander of the carrier Hiryu during the Battle of Midway. On 4 June 1942, he led the morning attack on the American base at Midway. Later, he led the torpedo attack on USS Yorktown (CV-5). He successfully dropped his torpedo but was shot down by Lieutenant Commander John S. Thach of Fighting Squadron 3 (VF-3)
