Fairey Battle Mk.I

Childhood memories (building the old Airfix kit) were the trigger for building the new Fairey Battle from Trumpeter. Since this kit is unfortunately not completely flawless, I will supplement it with parts (propeller, cockpit canopy and various small details) from the old Classic Airframes kit of the Battle. The bomb bays not included in the kit were built by myself.

The cockpit paintwork is finished and the fuselage is glued together.

The model is now ready for painting. The adaptation of the parts from the old CA kit to the Trumpeter parts went surprisingly well. Only the fuselage had to be modified a little to accommodate the front Vacu canopy.

I had already started painting when I realised that the transition from the large air intake radiator under the fuselage to the fuselage had a step that didn't belong there. In fact, the sides of the radiator and the fuselage should have a smooth flat surface, separated only by a panelling line. The reason for the mistake is that Trumpeter modelled the radiator housing much too narrow. I couldn't leave it like that and have since corrected it. Now I can finally get back to painting.

During the painting process I took another look at the propeller. The one from Trumpeter has much too short blades, which is why I wanted to use the one from the CA kit, but even its blades were 2.5 mm too short. I still had two propellers from the old Blenheim Mk.I from Classic Airframes in my spare box. I used them to build a new propeller with the correct diameter for the Battle and also made the shape of the blades more true to the original. In the undercarriage bay, Trumpeter also omitted a plate belonging to the retraction mechanism of the undercarriage. Here, however, I was able to use the corresponding parts from the CA kit. In the meantime I have finished the painting and have already applied the few decals.

The model is finally finished. Basically, this is a good kit with good details, a nice design of the surfaces of the fuselage and wings and a great accuracy of fit. Unfortunately, Trumpeter has again produced a number of errors which I have tried to correct. All in all, however, I am glad that a company is releasing models of aeroplanes that do not necessarily correspond to the usual mainstream and are therefore very welcome for me 👍

You have put a very nice machine on wheels. Built a great model from the old, difficult kit and painted it superbly. I like it very much.
