Thank you both! This is such a nice engine. I'm thinking of adding some more details before I glue it in the frame.

Great build so far! I've had the same issue with the masking tape, even after leaving it (tamiya) to dry for 5 days. I had to sand/polish off the rough texture. From now on I clear coat anything that needs masking.

I think Tamiya recommends removing the masking tape as soon as the paint becomes "touch" dry, i.e. a few minutes after applying the paint.

Thank you for the nice comment Nickfrost and for thank to George for the tips.
I have developed my painting method by doing a lot of mat WW2 airplanes. On a mat plane I can leave masking type for month without any problems. It seem that gloss paint is more sensible on the finish side. I might also have over sprayed since the white was not have a great opacity. That created (I think) a situation were the paint not fully cure when I applied the masking tape.
Now I apply one coat in a particular area and remove the masking tape within the hour. After I wait at least 5 days to leave plenty of time for the paint to dry.

I like this a lot. Been wanting to build this one for some time but I don't actually own one yet. *sad I love the red/white scheme.

Thank for your comment Spense!
It's a fun build. The Italeri is not stellar, but good none the less.

Tamiya tape seems to have glue that reacts with paint and leaves residue that cakes into the softened coat of paint, I've even had the same problem on the factory painted chrome and aluminium colored parts in Tamiya 1/14 truck kits. I've found that covering the Tamiya tape with some generic masking tape keeps the underlying paint intact. That said, you've built a very good looking racecar๐๐ป

Lovely result! ๐๐ป
The issue with the masking tape is something I've encountered a couple of times as well - both on cars and planes. It did dissapear after a coat of varnish. Now I make sure to remove glue from the tape as much as possible beforehand - running it on a clean table for example - and not keeping it on any longer than needed.
Again, beautiful M1 ๐๐ป

The M1 is one i will definately build, looking forward. Yours is looking very well in that red/white.
I am very much ok with using the Tamiya masking tape. I am paying attention that the edge is pressed well onto the part. I am using Q-tip and toothpick (the toothpick tip sideways to press the tape on). It is important that the tape forms a seal where the paint can't creep underneath by its surface tension effect.
After painting i remove the tape immediately, peeling off directing away from the painted side.
Good luck

Just to add to the tape situation... As others have said, mate sure that the edge is firmly pressed down. I use a variety of tools for this, plastic spatula, wooden coffee stirrer, anything with a blunt edge. Then, I shoot a coat of clear. I let that dry, then shoot my paint. Allow the paint to skin, then remove the tape.
Also, if you ever get any residue from the tape, this can be easily removed with WD-40. I just dip a Q-tip in some, and wipe the affected areas.
I'm not saying that what I do is correct, but it definitely works for me.

Thanks for the tip Bozzer, the masking tape issue really puts me off gloss builds

You're both welcome, gents. Scalemates is a brotherhood, although sisters are more than welcome 👍
Let's face it, we all want a perfect model replica? But if any of you guys live close to Manchester, UK, I've got a couple of ton of topsoil arriving soon, that I could do with a few spare shovels? 😛

What kind of paint are you using Bozzer. I can imagine the WD-40 eating into acrylics but not into lacquers, or the other way around.
I mainly use lacquers and I seldom have issues with Tamiya tape.
Very nice work BTW Guillaume

In fairness mate, all paint, however, I can't remember if I've ever used it on Tamiya Acrylic Matt paint? My armour days are a distant memory now 🙁
That reminds me, I might break out my 1/16 Sherman, later this year, and have a break from sexy trucks?
