Airfix 1/72 Jet Provost double build

Simple kits to build. Some details like the air intakes on top of the engine doors are missing so identifying a T.3 or T.4 is impossible.
I am only working on these between other jobs so it is slow progress.

My plan is to make one in the High Speed Silver and dayglo scheme and one in the red, white LAG scheme

The silver is too bright but will work as a base for a duller silver

I still managed to get some red overspray onto the white! And that is where they stalled

I decided to clear some shelf queens so these two are back on the bench. The red over spray mostly polished off so it was time to start decals on this one.

I'm using the Airfix kit decals.They are very nicely printed but quite thick so some VMS decal setting solutions were used to help them along.

The other JP was causing me some grief. I couldn't get a silver that I liked that depicted the worn looking High Speed Silver paint but eventually I settled on this.

The paint used is from Arcus in Ukraine and is part of the 1950's RAF Fighter set. It gives that grey tone to the silver that HSS often faded to.

This is my picture taken in 1982 while I was completing my RAF training. In the background there are 2 Jet Provosts, one in HSS and the other in the red/white/LAG scheme. These will be my subjects.

I did get all the stencil decals finished off on this one ready for a clear coat to seal everything in.

These were the decals I was really dreading, a one piece decal that folds right around the leading edge.
I soaked them in boiling water and that seemed to do the trick.

Argh, the black paint had bled under the masking tape. I felt this model was fighting me....

Masked the nose off again and sorted the paint bleed but the masking fluid attacked the acrylic paint I had used for the black. It really is putting up a fight.

usually I would use Mr Color GX100 for my clear gloss coat. This time I tried something new and it made a right mess

Oh boy, this is heading for the bin! As it was an acrylic clear coat I thought I'd try to remove it with some acrylic thinners, I had nothing to lose anyway.

I managed to scrub the mess off but have lost a lot of the smaller stencil decals....

I gave it a coat of Mr Color GX114 to seal in the decals and matte it off then used a pencil to pick out some of the panel lines and some graphite to add a few stains

I'm calling this one done. So much for a quick, fun build! These guys turned into a recurring nightmare.

A good friend sent me some replacement decals so it's time to get them in place. I'm watching the underwing serial number settle down into place (it dried perfectly I'm happy to say).

Great save! Picture 19 sent shivers down my spine.
GX100 (or GX112) is my go-to as well. I can't seem to get good results with non-lacquer gloss varnish.

Valiant work Duncan. I'm guessing from photo #10 that you're a Sumpy, or an Apprentice trained at RAF Halton. I'm a Rigger, trained there in 80 (Mech) and 85 (Tech).

It's a small world Duncan! I did my basic in the winter of '79. Then a few months at Coningsby waiting for a Mech course - not enough instructors apparently - before starting Halton in early '80. I left in '95 because it wasn't the same RAF that I'd joined. I was fortunate to spend 11 years on 101 Sqdn at Brize and travelling extensively. I loved it, would do it over again, but wouldn't look twice at today's RAF.
