Great subject matter. I have read the book. There is one USS Indianapolis survivor still alive as of September 2025: Harold Bray, who is currently 98 years old. Bray is the last living survivor of the infamous sinking of the ship during World War II. He continues to honor his shipmates and their story by speaking about the tragedy and the importance of courage, sacrifice, and survival.
I am building an aircraft model based on A PBY Catalina flying boat, piloted by Lieutenant Adrian Marks, who conducted a heroic open-ocean rescue of 56 survivors from the torpedoed USS Indianapolis in August 1945. After landing in 12-foot swells against standing orders, Marks' crew pulled survivors into the plane and tied others to its wings to protect them from exposure and shark attacks, rendering the aircraft unflyable and leading to its subsequent sinking after the rescue.
