This will be the next of two on my workbench the Revell Mk Vb and the Airfix Vc. 24 years apart in tooling, we'll see how they are. I'm looking forward to it. 🙂

I now declare this aircraft complete. Prop, undercarriage, rigging etc. all added/completed. Added a little smoke weathering as well (from engine exhausts).

The aircraft denoted was a Spitfire Vb of 64 Sqn RAF flown by Sqn Ldr Wilfred Duncan-Smith.
The basic Spitfire Mk V was a Mk I with the Merlin 45 series engine. This engine delivered 1,440 hp (1,074 kW) at take-off, and incorporated a new single-speed single-stage supercharger design. Improvements to the carburettor also allowed the Spitfire to use zero gravity manoeuvres without any problems with fuel flow.
The Spitfire Vb became the main production version of the Mark Vs. Along with the new Merlin 45 series the B wing (The B-type wing was structurally an A type modified to carry one 20 mm Hispano Cannon per wing, which replaced the two inner .303 machine guns.) was fitted as standard. As production progressed changes were incorporated, some of which became standard on all later Spitfires. Production started with several Mk Ibs which were converted to Mk Vbs by Supermarine.
There were 3,911 Spitfire Mk Vbs built, (776 by Supermarine, 2,995 Castle Bromwich and 140 Westland).
Group Captain Wilfrid George Gerald Duncan Smith, DSO & Bar, DFC & Two Bars, AE (28 May 1914 – 11 December 1996) was a Royal Air Force flying ace of the Second World War.
Duncan Smith was posted to the Spitfire-equipped 611 Sqn at RAF Hornchurch in October 1940 and went to 603 Sqn in August 1941 as a Flight Commander.
Upon recovery from double pneumonia in January 1942, Duncan Smith rejoined the Hornchurch Wing, now flying the improved Spitfire Mk. IX. In March 1942 he was promoted to acting squadron leader and given command of 64 Sqn.
During the ill-fated Dieppe Raid on 19 August 1942, Duncan Smith was shot down by an enemy fighter but rescued from the English Channel with injuries and eardrum pain. In August he became an acting Wing Commander (flying) at RAF North Weald. During his WW2 service he attained the rank of Group Captain.
On 22 March 1948, he was appointed to a permanent RAF commission in the rank of Squadron Leader, with seniority from the same date. He received a second Bar to his DFC for service in the Malayan Emergency in 1952 and was promoted to Wing Commander on 1 January 1953. He retired on 24 November 1960, retaining the rank of Group Captain.
Duncan Smith was credited with 17 enemy aircraft shot down, two shared destroyed, six probables, two shared probables and eight damaged in aerial combat. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order and Bar and the Distinguished Flying Cross and Two Bars in recognition of his bravery.
