Group Captain A G 'Sailor' Malan, DSO and Bar, DFC and Bar, was probably the outstanding fighter pilot of the war with 35 kills and 11 probables; he was never shot down and never even had to bale out. He was part of the fabric of Biggin Hill and CO of the crack 74 Tiger Squadron. 'Sailor' stayed on as a Wing Commander to be the first commander of the Biggin Wing and then in 1943 he returned as a Group Captain to command the station. After the war, he returned to his native South Africa, where he died in 1963.
