In January 1951, De Havilland Vampire replaced the Spitfire XVIII on RAF combat operations during the Malayan Emergency, 1948–1960. Specifically, it was the Vampire FB.5 was first to take over from the Spitfire in undertaking attack missions using a combination of rockets and bombs against insurgent targets often located in remote jungle areas throughout in Malaysia. The Vampire FB.5 became the most numerous single-seat variant of the type, 473 aircraft having been produced.
