The story behind the Trumpeter's 72-scale A-6A box art: On August 21, 1967, two A-6A Intruders from the US Navy's attack squadron VA-196 entered the airspace over Dongxing, Guangxi, near Aidian, east of Youyiguan. As the US aircraft approached, four J-6 fighters from the 18th Division of the People's Liberation Army Air Force, which had taken off on alert, immediately engaged them under the guidance of their command post. Squadron Leader Han Ruijie and Deputy Squadron Leader Chen Fengxia shot down US aircraft NK400 (BuNo 152625) and NK402 (BuNo 152627), respectively, killing three and capturing one of the four crew members on board. On the same day, another NK-410 (BuNo 152638) from VA-196 was shot down by an SA-2 near Hanoi.
The 154147 on the cover is actually a later NK-402 from the same squadron, converted into a KA-6D tanker in 1971 and serving until the 1990s.
