Activated in August 1942, the 14th Armored Division was landed at Marseilles France on 29th October 1944. In November 1944 the division joined the 7th Army in fighting to clear the Western approaches to the Rhine River. The 14th AD saw combat in the Vosges Mountains and on the Alsatian Plain. In January 1945, the 14th AD withstood the German Offensive, Operation Nordwind, which drove through the Vosges Mountains and onto the Alsatian Plain. Their 11 days stand at Hatten and Rittershoffen helped to halt the Offensive. In February the advance on the Rhine was continued and on April 1, the Division crossed at Worms. CCB attacked into the Spessart Forrest and advanced 75 miles on the first day to the city of Lohr. The 14th AD continued to advance across Southern Germany and into Austria liberating POW and labor camps along the way. VE found the division in Austria processing prisoners having had no firefights since May 2, 1945 (6 days).
