Time Line:
October 1937 - Established as 1. Light Brigade. It was intended for Cavalry type roles with tanks and motorized infantry. Tank Component was the 65th Panzer
Baattalion
April 1938- Expanded to 1. Light Division. Tank component expanded to 11th Panzer Regiment add in October 1938.
Spring 1939 - Received 130 PzKw 35(t) light tanks,
September 1939 - Took part in Polish Invasion. Equipment was 65 PzKw II, 112 PzKw 35(t), 41 PzKw IV, 8 Pzbef 35(t)
October 1939 - Redesignated 6. Panzer Division.
10 May 1940 - Spearheaded German advance through the Ardennes (Belgium). Panzer Regiment was equipped with 60 PzKw II, 118 PzKw 35(t), and 31 PzKw
IV, and 14 Pzbef 35(t). The Czech tanks had been out of production since 1937 and wear and tear and lack of spare parts was beginning to take
its toll.
June 1940 - Emerging from the Ardennes, the division had taken part in the dash to the English Channel, then wheeling Southeast, flanking the Maginot Line
and racing to the Swiss Border.
September 1940 - Moved to East Prussia.
June 1941 - Attacked Soviets in the Baltics with Army Group North. 47 Pzkw II, 155 PzKw 35(t), 30 Pzkw IV, 5 PzBef 35(t).
October 1941 - Transferred to Army Group Center and advanced toward Moscow. Desperately, the Soviet defense stiffened and then counterattacked. In the face of this and the brutal Russian Winter the division was decimated, losing nearly all its tanks.
Winter 1941-42 - 6. Panzer fought for its survival in the Rzhev Salient until March 1942
March 1942 - Rest and refit in France.
November 1942 - Moved to Southern Russia. Took part in Operation Winter Storm, the failed attempt to break through the Russian encirclement at Stalingrad.
1943 - 3rd Battle of Kharkov, Citadel: part of Army Detachment Kempf with 13 PzKw II, 52 PzKw III, 32 PzKw IV, 6 PzBef, 14 FlmmPz III, Korsun-Cherkassy. By
November the Division was depleted to a mere 25 operational tanks.
1944 - Kamenets-Podolsky pocket, Poland, East Prussia, Hungary.
1945 - Budapest, Vienna, Czechoslovakia. Surrendered to US 3rd Army in May but were then handed over to Soviet Forces.
