Founded in April 1941, the 4th Armored Division trained stateside until November 1943 when they shipped out to England to prepare for invasion of France. The division was assigned to Pattons' 3rd Army and arrived in France on 11 July 1944. On 24 July, the 3rd Army exploited the breached German lines at St Lo affected by Operation Cobra. After taking the town of Nante and sealing off Brittany, Patton turned East and advanced toward Nancy. On 16 September, the 3rd Army defeated a significant German counterattack from the Area around Nancy destroying large numbers of Panzers. 4th Armored's tanks and tank destroyers were in the thick of it. After a short rest in early October (supplies were short due to Operation Market Garden in Holland), 4th Armored spent the rest of the Fall fighting their way toward the German border.
On December 18, 1944, the 4th Armored raced North 150 miles in 19 hours into Belgium and attacked the Southern flank of the Bulge created by the German Offensive begun on December 16th. Patton's objective was to open a corridor to and relieve Bastogne. This was achieved on 26th December. The Germans counter-attacked determined to close the corridor to no avail.
In Early February 1945, Patton resumed his advance toward the Rhine River via Trier, Worms, and finally crossing the Rhine on 25 March. The 4th Armored then pushed East across Southern Germany in April and into Czechoslovakia on May 6th. On 8th May the War in Europe was over.
