Memory lane, building the first kit I ever built together with my dad in the late seventies. The Viggen was a new plane at that time and the airfix kit was quite cool then.
Will be a more or less OOB

This was the first kit I ever built, way back in the day. I've still got a few bit & pieces in my spares box!

Thanks John Hughes, Robert Podkoński & Finn for your interest. Welcome to the build!

The OOB approach didn't last very long….
Decided to go for a full rescribe and riveting to make the kit some justice.

Count me in. In what aspects does the prototype differ from the assembly line ones?

Welcome Michael!
Regarding your question - In total 7-8 prototype aircraft's were build for testing of both the single & double seater versions. A couple of them were lost in accidents.
Main visible differences are: Early prototypes didn't have the sawtooth wing with integrate radar warning equipment, another one is that the back of the airframe was flat compared with a little hump added for the production planes.

Thanks J35J for the explanation. The Viggen is still one of the coolest planes in my eyes and a Specialhobby kit is waiting in my stash...

Viggen is a cool, big & brutal plane. Also know as the "pine cone picker" coming from the fact that the Swedish Airforce always came on very stong in their daily training exercises during the Cold War days.

And they must have been quite on alert as the story shows when they saved a single engined SR-71 its ass.

Yes, there is quite some stories from those days.
The Baltic Sea was & is even these days an area of many incidents and encounters.
Some day I will try to depict on of many encounters from the Cold War. The project is laid out, just need to get the right Viggen version in order to start.
